Homeward bound: Lubbock’s homeless community talks about life with their dogs by their side

Kevin Aytes and his best friend Max sat at a convenience store on the corner of the Marsha Sharp Freeway access road and Avenue Q on a chilly January day.

Both were bundled up, Max wearing a Christmas sweater given to him by a woman in passing. Aytes, 50, expressed his feelings for Max while telling his life story.

“Max is my life,” Aytes said with a smile. “He keeps me alive out here. He keeps me warm, he protects me and everything else. He’s my best friend and family.”

After hearing his name, the Boxer-mix pooch popped up, waddled his way to Aytes and gave his paw in exchange for a smile and a pat on the head.
