Group Crocheting Sleeping Mats for Homeless

Members of the Winnecook Christian Church in Burnham are using recycling as a creative way to help the homeless.

Mercy MATters, the group created by Kathryn Miller, is crocheting sleeping mats for the homeless entirely out of plastic bags.

One mat takes five hundred to seven hundred plastics bags and is bug and water resistant.

Miller, who found the idea for the project online, is hoping to send a positive message.

“I’m calling this group Mercy MATters because we’re making mats and mercy is important. It’s an important way to show God’s love to other people and that’s what we’re all about,” says Miller.
